Into the Ancient Lands of AlUla, Saudi Arabia

“My tough equation: I love to travel, but I hate to leave!”

In the arid deserts of North Arabia lies the ancient city of AlUla-Hegra, a hidden gem that was once a bustling city of the mighty Nabatean civlization and a trading post for incense and myrrh. Currently, it is a UNESCO world heritage site and is continuously being excavated, uncovering yet-to-be-discovered hidden cities and artifacts. Most prominently, mighty tombs of its ancient citizens are all around the area that stood the test of time and are testimonies of the ancient life of the Arabs…

Welcome to AlUla, Saudi Arabia!

Itinerary

  • I landed in AlUla (which has its own small international airport) from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. There, I stayed in a furnished apartment and rented a car.
  • First, I visited Al-Hegra historical site, a UNESCO world heritage site, corresponding to the ancient booming city of the Nabatean civilization. This is where you can find those renowned tombs carved in the mountains, with the largest one being Qasr Al-Farid.
  • Then, I paid a visit to Dadan, the ancient capital of the Dadanite civilization with more tombs carved in the mountains in an open-air museum style. Nearby, Jabal Ikmah holds ancient carvings and writings on the side of the mountain that tell tails of these ancient peoples.
  • I also paid a visit to the Elephant Rock, a solitary rock formation in the middle of the desert that resembles an elephant through millennia of continuous wind erosions. This is a picturesque place with comfortable seating and several restaurants/cafes nearby. At night, there are light shows that are illuminated on this rock

  • Also, do not forget to pass by Harrat viewpoint, a nice viewpoint on top of a rock formation overlooking the vast desert (with its rock formations, towns, and beautiful sunsets), alongside a luxurious restaurant.

  • Finally, you cannot complete a trip of AlUla without paying visit to its old town and markets.

  • Added bonus: I did a desert hike through what’s called the “Hidden Valley” with a guided tour. This place is also fantastic for tracing back the old caravan routes, with writing dotting the rocks all around.

A Few Tips

  • You will be in the middle of the desert, so dress accordingly! It does become cold in winter but really hot in the summer. Make sure you got some sturdy boots for the hikes through the sands.
  • Speaking of adventures and hikes, all hikes have to be reserved through the AlUla tourism official site Experience AlUla. Make sure to reserve in advance as these spots are taken up quickly.
  • Be mindful of all the customs and rules of Saudi Arabia, especially the ones regarding modest clothing and certain public behaviors.
  • Visas on arrival are offered to travelers carrying certain passports (you can check whether your country is part of that list and apply for a visa here).
  • I would recommend renting a car since AlUla, although not heavily populated, is massive. Most car rentals have mileage limitations here, so be aware of that. Also, make sure to confirm your car rental reservation especially if you have done it through a third party (such as Expedia), as sometimes these third party agencies do not cooperate in real time with the car rental agencies on the ground.
  • Most tours are guided tours with large groups. However, you can elect to go for a private tour as well.
  • Lastly, do not miss out on the great hiking paths and adventure packages this place has to offer!
